A violent altercation took place in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals suspected to be involved in a cult. The incident unfolded around 11 am at Ukwuoji Bus Stop, located along Zik's Avenue in Awka.
Although the precise
motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is believed that a group of cult
members descended upon the area, firing shots indiscriminately into the air. In
a retaliatory response, their rivals engaged in a violent clash, leading to a
chaotic scene and prompting residents to seek safety by fleeing the area.
An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, provided an account of the event. According to the witness, approximately five criminals arrived in a vehicle with tinted windows, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. The assailants recklessly discharged firearms into the air, causing panic among the bystanders.
In the
midst of the chaos, they deliberately targeted their intended victims,
inflicting gunshot wounds before swiftly escaping the scene. It was noted that
some other cult members managed to flee as well, evading capture by the
authorities.
When contacted for information, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the presence of gunshots in the area but refrained from confirming any fatalities.
He emphasized that the police had increased patrols in Awka as a response to
the incident. Ikenga affirmed that the shootings were directly linked to cult
activities, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance and concerted efforts
to address the underlying issues that perpetuate such violence.
