IGP orders detained policemen involved in assault to report to force headquarters

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has taken decisive action against a team of policemen attached to the Edo State Police Command who were involved in a disturbing incident. In a video that circulated online, a middle-aged man in handcuffs was seen lying on the ground in front of a police van.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement condemning the act of unprofessionalism and illegality, assuring the public that such behavior would not be tolerated under the current leadership of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

The acting IGP has directed the erring policemen, who were previously detained in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further action. The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed that the officers involved in the incident have been arrested.

The incident itself stemmed from a routine stop-and-search operation, during which the driver of an unregistered Lexus car became aggressive and attacked the police operatives, causing injuries and damaging their vehicle. The driver, identified as Success Ehimare, was subsequently apprehended, handcuffed, and taken to the hospital for treatment.

CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara, the Commissioner of Police, has strongly condemned the actions of the policemen seen in the viral video, describing their conduct as barbaric, inhumane, and unprofessional. The arrested officers are currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department as investigations continue into the incident.
