Palpable tension has gripped residents of Owerri over attack on the Imo Correctional center and the state Police headquarters.
Residents woke up to the rude shock of incessant gunshot at the wee hours of Monday morning by unknown gunmen, to see wanton destruction of properties at the Police command and the prison.
It was gathered that, the gunmen chanted solidarity songs at the government house roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities, a police source who pleaded anonymity confided to lizzygistblog.
While breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, they were overheard telling prisoners to "Go home, Jesus has risen". "You have no reason to be here".
As at the time of filing this report, the number of casualties at the police command and Prison is still unknown.
While there are strong indications that prisoners were freed, the number could not also be ascertained.
This is coming after heightened insecurity situations in Imo with continuous attack on police formations across the state.
In a related event, the Imo state Teaching hospital was also said to have been attacked on Sunday.
Efforts to reach the Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Orlando Ikeokwu as at the time of filing this report, has proved abortive.
